Passengers travelling across Essex and Suffolk are being advised to plan ahead this November as GBR Anglia undertakes a programme of engineering work designed to improve railway reliability, maintain infrastructure and prepare for major Christmas track renewals.
The programme includes a £1 million platform renewal project at Bures station, essential track maintenance at several locations across the region, and preparatory works ahead of significant Christmas engineering activity at Forest Gate and Stratford.
While some weekend services will be altered and replacement bus services introduced on affected routes, the work forms part of a wider investment aimed at reducing failures, enhancing reliability and ensuring the railway remains safe for both passengers and freight traffic.
£1m Investment at Bures Station
A key element of the programme is a £1 million upgrade at Bures station, where Network Rail will undertake a full replacement of the platform deck alongside associated improvement works.
The project has been designed to enhance safety, improve accessibility and strengthen the long-term condition of the station infrastructure while preserving the platform's existing appearance and layout.
Key Engineering Works Scheduled
The November programme includes:
- Replacement of wheel timbers, vegetation management, tamping and general maintenance on the Harwich Town branch line.
- Platform renewal and upgrade works at Bures station.
- Rerailing and track maintenance work at Marks Tey and Kelvedon.
- Preparatory works on the Great Eastern Main Line ahead of major Christmas track engineering projects at Forest Gate and Stratford, alongside track treatment and maintenance activities.
- General maintenance on the Southend Victoria and Southminster lines.
These works are intended to improve asset reliability and support future infrastructure renewals across the Anglia route.
Industry Focus on Reliability and Safety
Martin Beable, Chief Operating Officer for GBR Anglia said:
“These projects are part of our ongoing investment in a safer, more reliable railway by renewing track, maintaining key infrastructure and investing in our stations, as well as preparing for major Christmas renewals at Forest Gate and Stratford.
“We know service changes can be inconvenient, and I'd like to thank passengers for their patience while this essential work takes place. We're working together to minimise disruption wherever possible, and we'd encourage passengers to check their journeys before travelling as some services will be replaced by buses on affected routes and dates.”
