Heavy Haul Power International GmbH (HHPI) has taken a significant step in the development of its locomotive fleet by adding its first Euro9000, leased from European Loc Pool (ELP). The move builds on the success of the operator’s existing EuroDual fleet, while unlocking greater power, enhanced multi-system capability and expanded cross-border operating potential.
The investment reflects HHPI’s long-term fleet strategy, which has seen the EuroDual become a cornerstone of its heavy freight operations. Over several years, the locomotive has established a strong reputation for reliability, flexibility and performance across demanding block train services.
Combining substantial electric traction power with an integrated diesel engine, the EuroDual has enabled HHPI to operate efficiently across both electrified and partially non-electrified routes, providing the versatility required in modern rail freight.
The addition of the Euro9000 takes that approach a step further. Designed specifically for Europe’s busiest freight corridors, the locomotive offers multi-system operation alongside impressive hauling capability. With up to 9 MW of electric power, 1.9 MW of combined diesel output and 500 kN of tractive effort, the Euro9000 is engineered to handle heavy freight services while maintaining operational flexibility.
“Our EuroDual locomotives have proven themselves over many years as a reliable backbone of our operations. Their performance, flexibility and high availability have made a significant contribution to our ability to handle demanding transport tasks safely and efficiently,” explains Lukas Dell, Authorised Representative of HHPI.
“With the Euro9000, we are now taking the next logical step. It does not replace the EuroDual, but strategically complements our fleet with additional electric power and new opportunities for cross-border operations.”
The introduction of the Euro9000 is expected to open new opportunities for HHPI, particularly in international freight traffic and long-distance block train operations. Its combination of high electric output, multi-system functionality and twin diesel engines enables seamless operation across national borders and on non-electrified sections, including first- and last-mile services.
The new locomotive also reinforces the close working relationship between HHPI and ELP, which has developed through the operator’s growing EuroDual fleet.
“We can rely on both the locomotives and the ELP team. Our cooperation is based on partnership, pragmatism and mutual respect,” says Dell.
For ELP, the agreement represents another milestone in its collaboration with the German freight operator.
Willem Goosen, CEO of European Loc Pool, adds: “The expansion of HHPI’s successful EuroDual fleet with its first Euro9000 marks an important milestone in our long-standing partnership. We are proud to support HHPI in opening up new operational opportunities with innovative technology and a comprehensive full-service offering.”
With demand continuing to grow for more powerful and flexible freight traction, HHPI’s latest investment underlines the increasing role of high-performance hybrid locomotives in supporting efficient, sustainable and cross-border rail freight operations across Europe.
