Hitachi Rail Secures First DB InfraGO Call-Off to Digitally Transform Nördlingen–Donauwörth–Augsburg Corridor

Hitachi Rail has been awarded the first call-off order from DB InfraGO’s major framework contract to upgrade signalling across Germany’s rail network, marking a significant step forward in the country’s push toward digital rail modernisation.

The contract covers the complete replacement of legacy mechanical and relay-based signalling on the Nördlingen – Donauwörth – Augsburg section with state-of-the-art digital systems. The upgrade is designed to deliver a more stable, high‑performance, and disruption‑resistant railway, supporting both regional reliability and long‑term operational resilience.

A Step Change in Network Stability and Performance

The enhancement programme includes the deployment of Digital Interlocking Technology (DSTW) and preparatory work for ETCS (European Train Control System). Together, these technologies will:

  • Improve real‑time operational management
  • Strengthen maintenance efficiency
  • Increase overall network stability
  • Boost availability and capacity on a key Bavarian route

The modernisation lays critical groundwork for a fully digital rail infrastructure, aligning with national and EU‑wide ambitions.

Supporting Germany’s “Digital Rail” Revolution

The project forms a core component of the “Digital Rail Germany” initiative—an ambitious national programme designed to increase the capability, efficiency, and reliability of the existing network through digital technologies.
Digital interlockings paired with ETCS are expected to enable denser, safer, and more predictable train operations across the country.

Strategic Upgrade on the ScanMed Corridor

The Nördlingen–Donauwörth–Augsburg line sits on the Scandinavian–Mediterranean Corridor (ScanMed), a critical TEN‑T route linking Northern Europe with the Mediterranean.
Upgrading this section enhances long-term operational stability and helps maximise capacity utilisation along one of Europe’s busiest strategic freight and passenger arteries.
