Okehampton Interchange

Inside the £15M Transformation: Okehampton Interchange Rises from the Rails

Network Rail has unveiled stunning new aerial images showcasing the impressive progress made over the first six months of construction at the upcoming Okehampton Interchange station. Scheduled to open in 2026, this new station will be a key addition to the Dartmoor Line, enhancing connections between West Devon, Torridge, North Cornwall, Exeter, and beyond.

Backed by a £15 million investment from the Department for Transport, with support from Devon County Council and West Devon Borough Council, the project is transforming travel in the region.

What’s Been Achieved So Far?

Construction began in January, and the site—just two minutes from the A30—has seen major developments:

  • Track Realignment: In March, 300 metres of single-line track were shifted 90cm north to make room for a new platform that meets modern station standards.
  • Infrastructure Upgrades: New track was laid along with 20 concrete sleepers, and 1,000 tonnes of ballast were compacted to stabilize the rail bed.
  • Drainage Improvements: Two new drainage chambers were installed beneath the track, supported by 300 tonnes of stone to ensure effective water flow away from the railway.
  • Foundation Work: In May, 25 bored piles were driven 12 metres deep to support the future platform, footbridge, and lift.

Okehampton Interchange 6 months progress

What’s Next?

The next major milestone will be the installation of the footbridge and lift shaft this autumn. Work is also underway on a 200-space car park and the station platform itself.

Okehampton Interchange is shaping up to be a transformative hub for the region—bringing improved accessibility, convenience, and connectivity to local communities.

Network Rail lead portfolio manager Alex Phillips said:

“The last six months has seen strong momentum on this important project, with several significant milestones reached.

“There’s more to come and we’re excited to bring the new station to life in the months ahead.”

Devon County Council cabinet member for climate change and biodiversity Councillor Jacqi Hodgson said:

“I'm sure everyone is pleased to see that good progress is being made on the site. Some major elements of the scheme will be carried out in the coming months, such as the installation of the footbridge, but everything is already taking shape. The Dartmoor Line is a tremendous success and we're looking forward to the opening of this new station which will make rail travel more convenient for even more people, reducing traffic congestion and helping reduce our carbon footprint in Devon.”

West Devon Borough Council’s lead member for planning and built environment Councillor Caroline Mott said:

“I am delighted with the positive progress that has been made so far. This initiative will significantly enhance the quality of life for our residents.

“Our commitment to fostering a vibrant and sustainable community remains unwavering and I am confident these developments will bring long-lasting benefits to everyone in West Devon.”

West Devon Borough Council’s lead member for economy Councillor Neil Jory said:

“This station is a pivotal moment in our journey towards economic growth and sustainability. By providing an efficient and accessible transport hub we are not only enhancing connectivity within the region but also opening new opportunities for our businesses.

“The station will serve as an incentive for local development, attracting investment, boosting tourism, and creating jobs. I look forward to the positive impact it will have on our borough and the wider region."

GWR Regional Growth Manager David Whiteway said:

“We’re really pleased to see the new Okehampton Interchange beginning to take shape.

“This will build on the success that the reopening of the Dartmoor Line has already had, better connecting people with jobs, students with education services, and leisure opportunities for all – providing valuable support for the community and local economies.”
