Network Rail is set to deliver a significant package of infrastructure upgrades on the Ipswich–Norwich main line across several April weekends, with engineers renewing ageing track, upgrading level crossings and progressing major signalling modernisation works. The interventions—scheduled for 11–12 April, 18–19 April, and Sunday 26 April—require full line closures, with buses replacing Greater Anglia services throughout.
Designed to reduce failures and improve long-term performance on this critical corridor, the engineering programme includes:
🔧 Key Upgrades Taking Place
- 550 metres of track replacement between Ipswich and Needham Market on the Norwich-bound line, including new ballast, sleepers and rails.
- 310 metres of rail renewal between Needham Market and Stowmarket on the London-bound line, replacing assets that have been in use for around 50 years.
- Level crossing improvements at Mellis, Tivetshall and Hales Street, where engineers will enhance surfaces and remove old ballast to ensure smoother experiences for rail passengers and road users.
- Maintenance of points systems, keeping essential movable rails in optimal condition for safe track switching.
- Progress on the Colchester–Norwich signalling upgrade, replacing 40-year-old components with modern, more reliable digital equipment.

Level crossing upgrades will require road closures on specific days, supported by signed diversion routes for Mellis and Tivetshall.
Passengers are urged to check updated journey plans before travelling via greateranglia.co.uk.
Mark Walker, Network Rail Anglia infrastructure director, said:
“This package of upgrades will see brand new track and signalling components going onto the railway, replacing equipment that is up to half a century old. We’re really sorry for the disruption, but this kind of engineering work is essential for maintaining our excellent reliability on this busy and vitally important line.”
