China's ambitious plans to shift more long-distance freight transport from road to rail are creating demand for longer, heavier and more intelligent trains. In response, Knorr-Bremse and China Railway's China Academy of Railway Sciences (CARS) have signed a comprehensive Memorandum of Understanding aimed at accelerating the development of advanced freight rail technologies.
The agreement focuses on three key areas: digitalisation, driver assistance systems and next-generation braking technologies, all designed to improve the safety, efficiency and performance of China's freight railway network.
The move represents a significant step forward in a partnership that has spanned more than two decades and underlines Knorr-Bremse's ambitions to strengthen its position in one of the world's most important rail markets.

The new China Freight Cooperation Program builds upon more than 20 years of successful collaboration between the two organisations. However, the latest agreement extends the relationship beyond individual product development towards the joint creation of integrated system-level innovations.

Digital Freight at the Heart of Modernisation
A major focus of the partnership will be freight digitalisation. The two organisations will collaborate on digital train architectures, predictive maintenance capabilities, wagon condition monitoring solutions and digital automatic couplers.
Many of these technologies are already being prepared for wider deployment in Europe as freight operators seek to improve productivity, enhance operational transparency and reduce maintenance costs.
Alongside coupler-based systems, Knorr-Bremse and CARS will also investigate wireless technologies powered by wagon-mounted energy storage systems, enabling enhanced fleet monitoring and improved service optimisation across large freight operations.
Intelligent Driver Assistance and Advanced Braking Systems
The partnership will also explore advanced driver assistance technologies aimed at improving operational efficiency and reducing energy consumption.
Development work will build upon proven technologies such as Knorr-Bremse's LEADER driver advisory system, which is already helping optimise freight train operations in Europe, North America and Australia.
In parallel, the companies will develop advanced braking systems specifically designed to meet the demands of long-distance and heavy-haul freight operations, supporting China's goal of increasing rail freight capacity while maintaining high safety standards.
A Multi-Billion-Euro Global Opportunity
The agreement comes at a time when freight rail modernisation is gaining pace across the globe.
Europe currently represents one of the most advanced freight upgrade programmes, with the original equipment market alone expected to reach around €25 billion, covering the modernisation of up to 500,000 freight wagons.
Knorr-Bremse believes its portfolio of digital, automated and safety-critical technologies positions the company to secure annual revenues in the mid triple-digit million-euro range in Europe.
China, which operates one of the world's largest freight rail fleets, is pursuing a similarly ambitious strategy focused on digital transformation and modal shift from road to rail. Combined with anticipated adoption of next-generation freight technologies in the United States, Knorr-Bremse estimates a long-term global annual revenue opportunity of more than €1 billion.
For the wider rail industry, the partnership highlights the growing importance of digitalisation, automation and intelligent braking systems as operators seek to move more freight by rail while improving capacity, sustainability and operational performance.
