Network Rail to close A890 to complete crucial maintenance work

The A890 is due to close overnight in order to facilitate essential safety and maintenance work by Network Rail at the Strathcarron level crossing on the Kyle of Lochalsh line.

The safety work, which includes a full corrosion inspection, is scheduled from 10pm on Saturday the 29th of October through to 7am on Sunday the 30th.

All level crossings have a programme of inspection to make sure that they are safe and operating at the required standard. As part of the maintenance, the units that make up the ‘road surface’ of the crossing will be removed, allowing Network Rail to thoroughly and diligently inspect the full length of both lines for signs of corrosion, silt build-up, and the need for any potential future maintenance work.

Network Rail is working with Highland Council to appropriately warn road users of the situation with no vehicles allowed over the crossing during the inspection – with the exception of emergency units.

Lee Ross, Infrastructure Maintenance Delivery Manager for Network Rail said: “The planned work at Strathcarron level crossing is unavoidable and the safest and quickest way to do what is needed is to close the road.

“The crossing equipment and surrounding track is regularly monitored as part of Network Rail’s rolling maintenance and inspection programme to ensure that it is safe and operating as designed.

“While we do appreciate the short-term impact of this work is inconvenient, the long-term benefit is that it helps minimise overall disruption for both passengers and road users and helps us to deliver a reliable and resilient railway.”
