Network Rail Consulting (NRC) has secured a significant $26 million (£20m approx.) contract with the Central Puget Sound Regional Transit Authority (Sound Transit), marking a major expansion of its North American footprint. The three-year deal will see NRC deliver comprehensive asset management support services across Sound Transit’s rapidly growing Link light rail network.
The contract comes at a pivotal time for Sound Transit as it continues to expand its light rail operations, placing increased emphasis on enhancing reliability, maintenance efficiency, and long-term asset performance.
Supporting a Growing Light Rail Network
Under the agreement, NRC will work closely with Sound Transit to strengthen asset management capability and optimise maintenance practices. The partnership aims to improve the reliability and performance of key infrastructure assets across the network.
The scope of services spans multiple engineering disciplines, including:
- Track and signalling systems
- Traction power distribution and overhead catenary systems (OCS)
- Supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA)
- Light rail rolling stock
- Telecommunications and data networks
- Station systems such as fire detection, suppression, and emergency ventilation
This multi-disciplinary approach reflects the complexity of modern light rail systems and aligns with global best practice in integrated asset management.
Driving Performance Through Digital and Process Transformation
A central element of the programme will be the development and rollout of enhanced asset management frameworks and systems. NRC will support Sound Transit in implementing robust strategies designed to maximise asset life, improve reliability, and reduce whole-life costs.
Key deliverables include:
- Development of asset management and maintenance strategies
- Integration and optimisation of an Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) system
- Delivery of training programmes to embed new processes and systems
- Establishment of competence management frameworks for safety-critical roles
- Enhancement of reliability management practices to reduce service disruption
- Implementation of quality assurance and verification processes
These initiatives are expected to drive measurable improvements in operational performance while supporting a safer, more resilient network.
Leadership Perspective
Commenting on the contract award, NRC’s Chief Executive Officer, Nigel Ash, said:
“We are proud to partner with Sound Transit as it continues to expand its Link light rail network.”
”This partnership reflects a shared commitment to delivering a more reliable and sustainable transit system. Through close collaboration, we will help strengthen asset performance and improve passenger experience while supporting the network’s long-term success.”
Strategic Growth in North America
This latest contract reinforces NRC’s growing presence in the North American transit market, where demand for specialist asset management expertise continues to rise. As rail networks expand and mature, operators are increasingly seeking support to transition from traditional maintenance approaches towards data-driven, reliability-centred asset management models.
For UK rail professionals, the project highlights a broader global trend: the increasing importance of integrated asset management systems, digital transformation, and skills development in ensuring the long-term sustainability of rail infrastructure.
With Sound Transit’s ambitious expansion plans, the partnership is expected to play a critical role in delivering improved service reliability and a better passenger experience, while setting a benchmark for light rail asset management in North America.
