Network Rail to Deliver Major Engineering and Accessibility Upgrades at Tenby Station

Network Rail is set to begin a significant programme of essential engineering work and accessibility improvements at Tenby Station, with a full line closure between Whitland and Pembroke Dock scheduled from 23:00 on Sunday 15 March to 05:45 on Saturday 21 March.

The closure will allow engineers to safely complete critical upgrades designed to improve the long-term reliability, safety and accessibility of the West Wales rail network.

Track Renewal and Maintenance Work Across West Wales

Throughout the possession, engineers will carry out extensive track renewal between Whitland and Narberth, supported by a range of essential maintenance activities across the route.
The programme includes:

  • Vegetation management
  • Fencing repairs
  • Level crossing maintenance
  • Inspections of earthworks and railway infrastructure

These works are aimed at strengthening the resilience of the line and improving reliability for passengers and communities that depend on rail services in the region.

Transformative Accessibility Upgrades at Tenby Station

Running in parallel with the engineering work, Network Rail is delivering major accessibility improvements at Tenby Station as part of the UK Government’s Access for All programme.

The scheme will deliver a new fully accessible footbridge fitted with lifts, improving access for disabled passengers, those with reduced mobility, parents with pushchairs and anyone travelling with luggage.

Key milestones include:

  • Demolition of the existing footbridge overnight on Saturday 14 March
  • Installation of a temporary scaffold footbridge the same weekend to maintain platform access

Further accessibility works will continue throughout the closure, with teams working continuously between 16 and 21 March.

Passenger Travel Arrangements

During the upgrade period, buses will replace trains, and passengers are advised to check journey times in advance and allow extra travel time.

Mark Dix, Lead Portfolio Manager at Network Rail Wales and Borders, said:

“These track upgrades and supporting works are essential to maintaining a safe and reliable railway for passengers across West Wales, while the improvements at Tenby Station will make a real difference for passengers who rely on step-free access.
We’d like to thank passengers, residents and local businesses for their patience while we carry out this important work.”
