New Battery-Powered Train Trials Aim to Decarbonise UK Railways

A new deal announced this week will pave the way for trials of innovative lightweight passenger trains that run entirely on battery power. The trains, known as Revolution Very Light Rail (RVLR) vehicles, are expected to carry passengers within three years and could significantly reduce emissions on Britain's railways.

Eversholt Rail, a leading rolling stock owning company, has signed contracts with Transport Design International (TDI) to build three new pre-series RVLR vehicles for passenger trials. TDI will manufacture the new vehicles in the Midlands, with assembly commencing in 2024 and the first vehicle ready for passenger operation in 2026.

The RVLR's modular design is said to enable a rapid production schedule, following on from successful trials and testing in Ironbridge over the past two years. These trials have provided valuable data that will inform wider deployment of RVLR vehicles.

"This substantial further investment by Eversholt Rail demonstrates our commitment to delivering innovative, sustainable and attractive new rail products for the UK market," commented Mary Kenny, CEO of Eversholt Rail. "We are delighted to be continuing our partnership with Transport Design International."

Sam Wauchope, chairman of Transport Design International, expressed enthusiasm for the joint investment, stating, "This is fantastic news for RVLR, and we are looking forward to working with Eversholt Rail to deliver this groundbreaking product that will modernize lower-density parts of the UK rail network with an environmentally sustainable and economic solution. TDI is investing in a new manufacturing facility for these vehicles, and as part of this programme we are developing our in-service charging technology, an essential for battery-only operations.

He added; “To ensure we remain at the cutting edge of this emerging technology, TDI is supported by Innovate UK for its ongoing technological developments in this sector. The innovation and light-weighting technology behind RVLR is superb and we are immensely proud of our UK-based engineering team.”

The RVLR vehicles are expected to attract interest from major rail operators seeking to fulfil their commitments to reducing the carbon footprint of rail travel. With their zero-emission operation and potential for rapid deployment, the RVLR could play a significant role in decarbonizing Britain's railways.
