Northern has confirmed that it has signed up to a national scheme that is committed to giving people equal opportunities.
This scheme will see the operator working to break down barriers that are stopping people from accessing the best opportunities, and contributing to the creation of a fairer society right across Northern’s network. Northern is well-placed to play a key role in improving social mobility and opportunity, thanks to the part that it plays in connecting people with education and employment, as well as other social events.
Alongside this, it is a major employer across the North of England with more than 7,000 people on the payroll and a supply chain that supports many more.
Commenting on this new drive for social mobility, Northern’s Managing Director Tricia Williams said:
“We know how important connectivity is to the social and economic fortunes of the North of England.
“The Purpose Coalition is one of the leading voices in this field and we are proud to collaborate with them on initiatives that will help everyone across our network achieve their full potential.
“It’s vital we keep the social mobility train moving forward.”
Now that Northern is part of The Purpose Coalition, the two organisations will come together to produce a new report that will delve into the impact that the operator makes in the North of England, with this helping to share best practice and explore how progress can be accelerated.
Former Secretary of State for Transport and Chair of The Purpose Coalition, the Rt Hon Justine Greening, also commented:
“We are thrilled to welcome Northern to The Purpose Coalition. Their commitment to connecting communities and fostering opportunities aligns perfectly with our mission.
“Rail is not just about improving connectivity; it's a catalyst for economic growth. A robust and efficient rail network can unlock new opportunities, drive regional development, and ensure the UK remains competitive in the global market.
“This partnership exemplifies how businesses can be a force for good, and we look forward to the impactful work ahead."
