Greater Anglia is preparing to install a pioneering modular footbridge at Stowmarket station, marking a significant milestone in UK rail infrastructure. The new ‘AVA’ footbridge—designed with accessibility at its core—will feature integrated lifts and is set to be installed over the weekend of Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 November, coinciding with planned engineering works on the Norwich–Ipswich line.
Brand-new visuals released by the operator showcase the bridge’s sleek, stainless steel design, which promises both aesthetic appeal and long-term durability. The modular structure is engineered for rapid installation and reduced on-site commissioning time, thanks to its ‘plug-and-play’ lift system.

Andrew Goodrum, Infrastructure and Projects Director for Greater Anglia, commented:
“Greater Anglia is making good progress on the preparation works for this new, first-of-its-kind footbridge ahead of its installation later this year, which will enable easier, more accessible journeys for passengers using and changing trains at Stowmarket station.
We are looking forward to delivering this revolutionary new footbridge, complete with lifts, for our customers.”
The £5.5 million scheme, funded through the Department for Transport’s Access for All programme, replaces the existing concrete footbridge with a more sustainable and passenger-friendly alternative. Currently, the only step-free route across platforms is via the level crossing—an arrangement the new bridge will significantly improve.

The modular design not only accelerates construction timelines but also reduces disruption for passengers and the local community. Its stainless steel build eliminates the need for painting and simplifies maintenance, aligning with industry goals for cost-effective asset management.
To facilitate the installation, parking at Stowmarket station will be temporarily reduced from 17 November to 4 December, as cranes and bridge components are delivered to site.
Following installation, the bridge will undergo a brief testing phase, with passenger access expected to commence in early January 2026.
