Revolutionary TfW South Wales Metro tram-train enters testing phase

Transport for Wales has confirmed that its new tram-trains are now in testing.

The new CITYLINK Class 398 Tram-Trains, developed and manufactured by Stadler, will be able to run on both rail and tram lines in a unique arrangement that it is hoped will revolutionise light rail in the U.K

The trains will be able to operate on electrical lines alongside being fitted with traction-battery packages that means it can run on non-electrified lines. The CITYLINK tram-trains will be able to carry more than 250 passengers and on rail, run to speeds of up to 100km per hour.

The new CITYLINK tram-train is one of three new models being developed by Stadler for the South West Metro.

Alongside the new CITYLINK, Stadler are manufacturing a Class 231 FLIRT model and a Class 756 FLIRT model which will be tri-mode, operating with a diesel, electric and battery unit. They’ve delivered six of 11 Class 231 models already.

Transport for Wales recently electrified the first phase of the South Wales Metro and will continue with efforts to electrify the Merthyr line later this year. The CITYLINK trains are scheduled to be in service in 2024.

Alexia Course, chief commercial officer at Transport for Wales said: “This is another major milestone for us at TfW, we’ve already introduced three new types of train to our network for passengers to use this year.  We’re now pleased to be testing our light rail tram-trains that will operate a turn up and go service on the South Wales Metro in the very near future.

“Wales has yet to experience light rail travel and these vehicles will provide faster, cleaner and more efficient travel.  We’re investing £800 million in brand-new trains for Wales and a billion pounds on the South Wales Metro and through transforming our network we want to encourage more people to travel sustainably.”
