Siemens Mobility has handed over the 2,000th electric Vectron locomotive produced to ÖBB (Austrian Federal Railways), marking a significant milestone for one of Europe's most successful locomotive platforms. With almost 3,000 Vectron locomotives sold to more than 115 customers, the platform has become the benchmark for interoperable, cross-border rail operations across the continent.
The delivery highlights the continued demand for locomotives capable of operating seamlessly across multiple European networks, supporting both passenger and freight services on key international corridors.
“The 2,000th electric Vectron locomotive represents far more than just a production number – it stands for the trust that railway operators across Europe place in our platform every day. Vectron combines versatility and interoperability with the flexibility to meet a wide range of requirements in European markets.”
“With the digital Vectron X, we are consistently further developing this successful platform and opening the next chapter in its success story,”
says Steffen Bobsien, Vice President Locomotives and Coaches at Siemens Mobility.
Since its introduction in 2012, the Vectron has been manufactured at Siemens Mobility's Munich-Allach facility and has established itself as a leading choice for operators requiring reliable international capability. The locomotive is approved for operation in 20 European countries and is uniquely certified to run at speeds of up to 230 km/h in passenger service.
Its multi-system architecture enables operators to move efficiently across national borders without changing locomotives, making it particularly attractive for international passenger and freight routes where operational flexibility is critical.
Vectron X Signals the Next Phase of Digital Rail Operations
Building on the success of the Vectron platform, Siemens Mobility has unveiled the next generation of the locomotive with the launch of Vectron X.
The new model introduces a digital ecosystem into the driver's cab, including what Siemens describes as the first app store integrated into a locomotive. The technology allows operators to access applications from Siemens Mobility and third-party developers directly via the onboard Smart Screen.
Digital tools such as Remote Start, Vectron Eco Cruise and Trainplay are designed to improve operational efficiency, vehicle availability and maintenance planning. The platform also provides structured vehicle data through standardised interfaces, enabling condition monitoring and supporting predictive maintenance strategies.
By transforming the locomotive into an open digital platform, Siemens Mobility is aiming to help operators reduce lifecycle costs, improve fleet performance and accelerate the digitalisation of rail transport across Europe.
With nearly 3,000 locomotives sold and a growing focus on data-driven operations, the Vectron platform continues to set the standard for modern European rail traction.
