Siemens Mobility rolls out geofencing technology nationally

Siemens Mobility, has announced the national rollout of new geofencing technology across its UK business operations. This decision comes after a successful six-month pilot program that demonstrated the technology's effectiveness in improving worker safety and operational efficiency.

The initial pilot in Northumberland was followed by a wider deployment in Devon and Cornwall, where it was seamlessly integrated into day-to-day operations. The positive results of these trials, including increased safety and improved efficiency, led Siemens to adopt the solution on a national scale.

"This national deployment marks a major advancement in railway safety," said Leo Scott Smith, CEO and founder of Tended. "We are thrilled to see our technology embraced by industry leaders like Siemens, as it represents a significant step towards creating safer work environments for rail workers across the nation."

The geofencing solution will be used to provide an additional layer of protection for Siemens’ trackside teams as well as manage and track key assets and vehicles. It provides full worksite visibility, showing the live location of vehicles including RRVs and trolleys. By showing the location, it helps identify and prevent any unsafe events.

For workers, it will help to ensure teams access sites in the right location, confirm they are working on the correct rail line and alert them if they stray too close to any lines still open to traffic.

Siemens has also confirmed that it is collaborating with the European Space Agency to develop the next generation of this geofencing solution. The new generation can include in-cab alerts for speeding vehicles and proximity warnings.

Mike Sharp, Head of Infrastructure Access at Siemens added: “Following the success of the geofencing trials over the past 6 months, we are very excited to be rolling out the technology on a national level.

“We look forward to continuing to see the positive impact of the technology across work functions and our operational efficiency. We’re proud to say that this deployment is in line with our commitment to innovation and safety improvements, and we’re excited to see the difference across our business.”
