Siemens secure largest Mireo order to date

Siemens Mobility has secured a significant order worth around €500 million to deliver 75 Mireo trains for the “Central German S-Bahn Network 2025+” (MDSB 2025+) project. The award marks the largest Mireo order to date for the company.

The new trains will be used to serve the growing demand for public transportation in the Leipzig metropolitan region and surrounding areas. The order comprises 41 three-car Mireo trains for Die Länderbahn DLB, as well as 18 four-car Mireo trains and 16 two-car battery-powered Mireo Plus B trains for DB Regio AG.

The MDSB 2025+ project is a joint enterprise between Leipzig transport authority ZVNL, its partners ZVMS and ZVV as well as governmental departments, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Digital Affairs and Thuringian Ministry of Infrastructure and Agriculture.

“The ZVNL and its partners in the Central German S-Bahn network have high expectations for the use of these modern, environmentally friendly vehicles,” said Kai Emanuel, chairman of the ZVNL association. “We are hoping for a high level of acceptance, which will be reflected in rising passenger numbers.”

The trains will cover a total of 10.6 million train kilometres a year in the MDSB network, and will operate on several lines across the wider Leipzig region once they are fully operational by 2026.

“Our Mireo train is a proven success model that contributes to a high level of passenger comfort and satisfaction,” said Gerhard Greiter, CEO North East and Eastern Europe at Siemens Mobility. “We are delighted to have received the order for 75 Mireo trains for the Central German S-Bahn Network. It is our largest Mireo order to date.”

“The Leipzig transport hub is one of the most important in the Central German metropolitan region,” Greiter added. “With the delivery of the Mireo trains, we are enabling greater flexibility for public transport in Central Germany, higher capacity per train and more comfort for passengers. This order marks a further step towards achieving a transition in rail transport: By offering more space, better equipment and features, and higher operating frequency, rail transport is becoming more and more attractive.”

The news of this Mireo order follows on from the announcement of its first hydrogen fleet entering testing at its plant in Krefeld. The Mireo Plus H is undergoing trials ahead of its delivery to the Berlin network in autumn 2024.
