Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) is set to deliver one of the most extensive upgrade programmes in Metrolink’s history as part of a £150 million network investment designed to strengthen track infrastructure, improve tram reliability, and expand workforce capacity across the Bee Network.
The works—spanning spring through autumn 2026—represent a major effort to future‑proof the system for the millions of passengers who rely on it each year. While the programme is underway, TfGM has confirmed that passengers should expect temporary disruption, with full details and advance travel information released ahead of each closure.
Where and When the Major Works Will Happen
Infrastructure upgrades will take place at several key points on the network, including:
- Trafford Bar
- Deansgate-Castlefield
- Monsall
- Newton Heath & Moston
- Eccles
- Derker
- Piccadilly Gardens
The first major disruption will occur across the Easter Weekend (3–6 April), when preparatory works at Trafford Bar and Deansgate-Castlefield will be completed ahead of full track replacement later in the year. Rail replacement works will also take place on the Altrincham line during this period.
As a result:
- No trams will run on the Altrincham, Eccles, or Trafford Park lines all weekend.
- Airport and East Didsbury services will terminate at Firswood.
Temporary Timetable from 30 March
From Monday 30 March until autumn, TfGM will introduce a revised timetable across the Metrolink network. Passengers can expect:
- Frequent 15‑minute services
- Enhanced capacity with double trams
- Increased peak‑time provision every 7.5 minutes on the busiest corridors
This timetable supports TfGM’s parallel recruitment drive for new tram drivers, aimed at building long‑term resilience and service reliability.
Fleet Upgrades and Network Improvements
TfGM and Metrolink operator KAM will also use the reduced timetable to carry out deep cleaning, maintenance and wider tram improvements on vehicles not currently in service. This is expected to deliver:
- Better tram reliability
- Enhanced passenger experience
- Reduced faults across the network
Real‑time updates will continue to be issued via official Bee Network channels.
Official Statement
Ian Davies, Network Director for Metrolink at TfGM, said:

“Whilst we complete this work, we will introduce a temporary timetable change that will run between spring and autumn.
“We know that some of this work will mean temporary disruption, and I want to thank passengers for their patience while we get it done. By investing now, we can reduce faults, improve day to day reliability and make sure Metrolink can keep pace with the growing number of people who depend on it every day now and for the future.”
