Track laying technology used on East West Rail

East West Rail has completed the first stage of track laying for the project using an innovative track laying solution. The New Track Construction (NTC) train has completed 58 shifts, laying the foundation for the ambitious project.

The NTC train uses an automated track laying system which is faster than using conventional track laying methods and can lay up to 1km of new track a day. Use of the NTC train has also helped to remove around 4,000 lorry journeys from local roads during the construction period.

Mark Cuzner, East West Rail alliance director said: “Thanks to the combined efforts of the entire team the project is in a healthy position to complete the final section of track installation in the new year, to allow installation of the railway systems before testing of the new railway later in 2024.”

The completed section boasts 66km of new track between Bletchley and Bicester. With final welding, stressing, and track alignment works set for the new year, the stage is set for passenger services to begin in 2025.

Alongside the completion of the track laying, installation of the signalling and telecoms equipment is also underway which once completed will be followed by dynamic testing on the line.

For residents of along the East West Rail corridor, the new line will mean a revival of direct passenger services, the first in over 50 years with the new line also opening new opportunities for freight.
