Improvement on Oldham to Rochdale line

Tram services resume on Oldham–Rochdale line after major Metrolink track renewal milestone

Tram services have fully resumed on the Oldham–Rochdale Metrolink line following the successful completion of essential track replacement works, marking a significant early milestone in this summer’s programme of network improvements across Greater Manchester.

The planned two‑week closure between Victoria and Rochdale town centre formed part of a wider £150m investment programme to maintain and upgrade the Metrolink network. The works are designed to improve ride quality, reliability and long‑term resilience, while supporting the continued growth of the Bee Network.

During the closure, engineering teams worked around the clock between Monsall and Newton Heath & Moston, delivering a comprehensive package of infrastructure upgrades. This included replacing 1.2km of track, improving drainage, renewing track foundations and correcting both alignment and track levels.

The scale of the project was substantial. Engineers installed around 290 new concrete sleepers, laid 2,000 tonnes of gravel, and replaced more than 5,000 tonnes of ballast, ensuring the route is fit for sustained high‑performance operation.

Track Replacement work

As a direct result of the works, several sections of the line that were previously subject to speed restrictions have now returned to normal operating speeds – up to 50mph in some locations – helping to reduce journey times and improve service consistency for passengers.

This was a large and complex piece of engineering, that will make a real difference to the reliability and long-term condition of the network.

It’s the first major milestone of a wider programme of improvements being delivered across our tram network this summer to keep it safe, resilient and fit for the future.

Further improvement works are planned at multiple locations across the Bee Network in the coming months. The most significant interventions will take place at Trafford Bar and Deansgate‑Castlefield. As a result, there will be no tram services on the Eccles, Trafford Centre or Altrincham lines for three weeks, from Monday 13 July to Sunday 2 August.

Ahead of this, additional city‑centre tram works are scheduled. No trams will operate via Market Street or Shudehill between Monday 1 and Tuesday 9 June. During this period, customers may need to change trams, walk short distances or use the free bus service. Outside free bus operating hours, a replacement bus will run between Piccadilly and Victoria.

Final follow‑up works to complete the Oldham–Rochdale scheme are also planned for Sunday 7 June and Sunday 12 July.
