Apprenticeship opportunities

TransPennine Express is looking for individuals to maximise themselves within the rail industry

TransPennine Express (TPE) are unveiling their brand-new apprenticeship scheme, which will seek to provide new opportunities for people to dip their toes into the rail game for the northern region.

TPE is a train company that operates in the North of England and into Scotland, offering 4 brand new apprenticeships that are looking to increase interest and opportunities for those interested in a career in rail. The apprenticeships are available in its Business Development, IT, Performance and Service Planning departments, with the successful applicants guaranteed a two-opportunity to experience a career in rail.

To add incentivisation and attract people to the scheme, as well as gaining vital experience in the rail industry itself, the apprentices will also gain a professional qualification and achieve the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award as part of the scheme. These components come together to create an exciting opportunity that allows accessibility within the rail industry, especially for the younger generations looking to establish themselves within a staple industry such as rail.

Becky Jones, Talent and Apprenticeship Manager for TransPennine Express said: “We’re looking for the industry’s stars of the future and there has never been a better time to get on-board with our apprenticeship scheme.

“Our mission is to deliver the best possible service for our customers and to connect the communities we serve, and we expect our apprentices to get stuck in and help us achieve this. We want enthusiastic, customer-focussed people who are keen to learn and work in a fast-paced, varied industry. In return we’ll provide a fantastic introduction to rail and all the skills needed to carve out a fabulous career.”

TPE are looking for the rail stars of the future, one of which is Shannon Pilkington, a recent recruit who joined TPE in the 2021 intake, alongside 13 other applicants. After recently completing the apprenticeship and securing a permanent position in the Control Team, Shannon spoke highly of the opportunity, stating:

“Completing an apprenticeship is the best decision I’ve ever made, and I would highly recommend it to anyone wanting to go into the rail industry.

“It sets you up for your railway career and it's the best way to learn, especially with TPE because you’re able to experience learning from various departments so you're going to have some great knowledge when you start a full-time role.”

Whether you have always dreamed of a career in rail or are new to the idea but find the prospect exciting, this apprentice scheme can offer a great deal in educational nurturing as well as a boost to individual confidence as applicants will learn great skills that will greatly help them with future endeavours.

Anyone interested in applying for the apprenticeship scheme needs to be quick though as the closing date for applications is Monday 16 May 2022.
