Work Begins on Delivering Full Step Free Access at Thameslink’s Luton Station

Network Rail has officially launched a major accessibility upgrade at Thameslink’s Luton station, marking a significant step forward in improving step‑free access across the UK rail network.

The project—funded through the Government’s Access for All programme—will introduce a new fully accessible footbridge and three lifts, allowing passengers to reach every platform without using stairs. Currently, only platform 5 offers step‑free access.

Once complete, the upgrade will deliver an unobstructed, accessible route from the station entrance and drop‑off points to all platforms, improving safety, convenience and independence for passengers, particularly those with reduced mobility or travelling with prams or luggage.

📅 Construction Timeline

  • Main construction: February–December
  • Bridge installation: June
  • Lift installation: Late 2026
  • Project completion: Spring 2027

Rail Minister Lord Hendy said:

“We’re building a railway that works for everyone and these improvements at Luton station will mean more people can travel independently. Whether it’s commuting to work, accessing education, or visiting loved ones, everyone should be able to travel with confidence.
“With the support of Network Rail and local partners, our Access for All programme is delivering practical changes that make a real difference for passengers.”

Carl Martin, Accessibility Lead at Thameslink, added:

Nick Wilton, Network Rail sponsor, said:

“Delivering step free access at Luton is an important investment in making the station more welcoming and easier for everyone to use.
“The new footbridge and lifts will provide a safe, accessible route to every platform and create a much better experience for passengers, particularly those with reduced mobility or travelling with luggage or prams.
“We’re pleased to have started work and look forward to completing the improvements as quickly and safely as possible.”

Rachel Hopkins, MP for Luton South and South Bedfordshire, commented:

“After campaigning for lifts at Luton Station for many years, including numerous discussions with Network Rail and the Department for Transport, I am very pleased that initial works to install lifts at Luton Station are finally now under way.
“This much-needed work will provide long overdue accessibility measures, so all residents in Luton South and South Bedfordshire can utilise the station and travel on our railway without difficulty. Be assured that I will be keeping a close eye on the progress of this long-awaited work.”
