Ex-Scotrail boss to work on franchise bidding for National Express

The former head of ScotRail, Mary Grant, who helped FirstGroup secure the franchise is to work on National Express’s bid to win it back.

The Scotsman has reported that Grant, currently working on international projects for the transport group as managing director for business development, will from next year work on railway franchise bids – once her three-year departure agreement with First stopping her from UK rail work expires.

Grant – dubbed one of Scotland’s “highest-flying businesswomen” by newspapers – was managing director of ScotRail until 2009. She had been working in the mobile phone industry after leaving First two years ago.

The Scotsman quoted one rail professional as saying: “She was the most outstanding managing director I have worked with in 25 years on the railways. She is second to none, straight and effective.”

Transport Scotland is seeking expressions of interest from operators by next month.
