Alstom has secured a major contract to supply 234 Metropolis metro cars and a cutting-edge Communications Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling system for Mumbai Metro Line 4. The agreement includes five years of maintenance and is valued at several hundred million euros.
Mumbai Metro Line 4, also known as the Green Line, is a 35.3 km elevated corridor connecting Wadala in Central Mumbai to Kasarvadavali in Thane. With 32 stations, it will be one of the city’s longest metro lines, enhancing connectivity to the Eastern Express Highway, Monorail, and other metro lines.
Under the Indian Government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative, all 39 six-car trainsets will be designed at Alstom’s Bangalore engineering centre and manufactured at its Sri City facility in Andhra Pradesh. Propulsion systems will be produced in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, and bogies in Savli, Gujarat.
Alstom’s Sri City plant, with an annual capacity of 480 cars, has a proven track record of delivering trainsets for domestic and international projects, including driverless metros for Delhi, Chennai, Montreal, and Sydney.
The driverless Metropolis trains will feature a modern design focused on passenger comfort and accessibility. Key features include:
- Interior airflow cooling
- Wheelchair access
- Bike racks
- Electrical braking systems
- Cybersecurity measures
Alstom will also provide FlexCare Perform maintenance services for five years, ensuring safe and reliable operations for the entire fleet.
Ling Fang, Alstom’s APAC Region President, said:
“We are honoured to be chosen for the prestigious Mumbai Metro Line 4 project, further strengthening our long-standing association with the city of Mumbai. Alstom-built trains and signalling solutions are already serving on other Mumbai Metro lines. This ambitious new project presents more opportunities for us to provide best-in-class solutions to the commuters and contribute to elevating the financial capital’s infrastructure”.

Alstom has played a pivotal role in Mumbai’s metro development, having supplied trains and signalling for the Aqua Line, which now carries over 1.6 million passengers daily. The company is also delivering signalling and telecom solutions for Lines 2, 7, 7A, and 9.
This latest partnership with L&T reinforces Alstom’s commitment to transforming urban mobility in India through innovation, sustainability, and local manufacturing.
