Avanti West Coast delivered more than £5 billion in economic value to the UK last year, according to a new independent report unveiled at the operator's annual Stakeholder Conference in Manchester.
The study, produced by transport consultancy Steer and released on 8 September, highlights the far-reaching economic, social and environmental contribution made by the intercity operator across London, the North West, West Midlands, Scotland and North Wales.
According to the report, every £1 invested in Avanti West Coast's services, workforce and supply chain generates £5.10 in wider economic value, underlining the railway's significant role in supporting communities, businesses and regional economies along the West Coast Main Line.
The analysis found that Avanti West Coast services generate more than £4 billion in economic, social and environmental benefits annually. These include passenger time savings, improved connectivity between major economic centres, increased productivity, and the environmental advantages of encouraging travellers to switch from road and air transport to rail.
The economic and social benefits generated by Avanti West Coast are felt across every region it serves, with:
- £1.6 billion delivered in London
- £1.2 billion in the North West of England
- £640.9 million in the West Midlands
- £304 million in Scotland
- £154 million in Wales
The report demonstrates how the railway continues to act as a critical economic link between some of the UK's largest cities, enabling businesses to grow, supporting labour mobility and improving access to opportunities.
The report also reinforces the role rail travel plays in supporting the UK's sustainability ambitions.
During 2025, journeys made on Avanti West Coast services prevented more than two billion kilometres of road travel, helping avoid 261,000 tonnes of carbon emissions. The resulting environmental benefits were valued at more than £100 million, alongside wider benefits created through reduced traffic congestion.
In addition, the report estimates that over one million domestic air journeys are avoided each year because passengers choose Avanti West Coast services instead. This equates to more than 114,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions being prevented annually.
Alongside its economic and environmental contribution, the operator generated approximately £471 million in social value through community engagement, accessibility initiatives and educational programmes.
Key achievements highlighted in the report include:
- Support provided to more than 2,000 young people through educational initiatives
- A 30 per cent increase in Passenger Assistance usage
- Delivery of 290 community projects across the route
These programmes have helped improve accessibility, develop skills, create opportunities and strengthen local communities across the network.
Avanti West Coast continues to make a significant contribution to regional economies through its supply chain, investing more than £700 million annually with suppliers located along the West Coast Main Line.
Of this spend:
- 41 per cent is invested in London
- 20 per cent in North West England
- 17 per cent in the West Midlands
- Seven per cent in Scotland
- Seven per cent in Wales
The expenditure supports a range of services including train and station cleaning, catering provision, food and drink suppliers, rolling stock maintenance and fleet upgrade programmes.
The operator also invests around £100 million annually in its workforce, covering salaries, training, uniforms and equipment.
Combined spending by Avanti West Coast employees and supply chain workers contributes a further £523.1 million to the wider economy, supporting an estimated 6,500 additional jobs across the UK.
Andy Mellors, Managing Director at Avanti West Coast, said:
“This report highlights the wider impact of Avanti West Coast in creating value through everyday railway journeys.
“We’re incredibly proud to serve the towns, cities and regions across the West Coast Main Line. It is important that the value we create extends beyond the railway itself – supporting jobs and businesses, improving connectivity between major economic centres, and delivering benefits for customers, communities and taxpayers alike.

“The true value of train travel is often overlooked, with each journey made having a different, individual reason. Our services enable people to travel for work, study, leisure, or to see friends and family, and provide access to opportunities which enable businesses to grow and allow communities to thrive.
“This report measures the value of connection in pounds, places and outcomes. But its real value is reflected in the opportunities created, the lives changed and the stories that unfold across our network every day.”
