The Cambrian Coast Line has officially reopened following a significant nine‑day programme of track upgrades designed to strengthen the long‑term reliability of rail services between Pwllheli and Dovey Junction.
Delivered between Saturday 14 and Sunday 22 February, Network Rail engineers completed a comprehensive package of works that included 1.4 miles of track renewal, essential maintenance and a series of safety‑critical infrastructure improvements. The upgrade is expected to reduce unplanned disruption and improve future performance along one of Wales’ most scenic—and operationally challenging—routes.
Despite harsh winter weather, teams worked around the clock to finish the project safely and on time.

Major Works Delivered Across the Route
The scale of the upgrade demonstrates Network Rail’s commitment to long‑term route resilience:
- 105 skilled staff on site each day
- 100 tonnes of ballast removed
- 2,700 tonnes of fresh ballast installed
- 3,660 sleepers replaced
- Two road level crossings renewed
- Llwyn Cadwgan – Station Road
- Bennar Fawr – Fordd Isaf
Track renewal involves replacing rails, sleepers and ballast—the foundational components that support train safety and operational reliability. By upgrading these simultaneously, engineers have significantly improved track condition and reduced the likelihood of future faults or speed restrictions.
Alongside this core renewal work, engineers also completed:
- Track maintenance to support smoother journeys
- Level crossing upgrades improving safety for motorists and pedestrians
- Detailed bridge inspections to help safeguard long‑term infrastructure resilience
