Cambridge South station has received its final approval from the Office of Rail and Road (ORR), paving the way for the much-anticipated new facility to enter public service on Sunday 28 June 2026.
The authorisation marks the final regulatory hurdle for the project, concluding more than three years of construction and rigorous safety assurance. GBR Anglia has worked closely with the independent rail safety regulator for over a year, ensuring the station complies with the UK’s stringent operational and safety standards.
Final Approval After Extensive Safety Coordination
The ORR’s approval confirms that Cambridge South is fully compliant and ready for passenger use. Collaboration between GBR Anglia, principal contractor Murphy, and regulatory bodies has been central to achieving this milestone.
Construction teams have demonstrated that the station meets all operational and safety requirements, ensuring it is fit to serve the large and growing number of anticipated users.
Transformational Connectivity for Cambridge Biomedical Campus
The new station is expected to significantly improve accessibility to the Cambridge Biomedical Campus (CBC)—Europe’s largest medical research hub—benefiting approximately 1.8 million passengers annually, including patients, staff, and visitors.
Passengers will benefit from improved, sustainable journey options, with direct rail access to key healthcare facilities such as Addenbrooke’s Hospital and Royal Papworth Hospital. The station will also enhance connectivity across East Anglia, linking areas including Ely and Norwich, alongside longer-distance destinations such as London, Birmingham and Brighton.
Direct Links to Major Transport Hubs
Cambridge South will provide seamless connections to major international gateways, including:
- Stansted Airport
- Gatwick Airport
- St Pancras International
Frequent services between Cambridge and Cambridge South will further strengthen local connectivity, with up to nine trains per hour during peak times. Operators serving the station will include Greater Anglia, Great Northern, Thameslink and CrossCountry.
Industry Reaction
Emily Heria, Senior Sponsor on behalf of GBR Anglia, said:
"Gaining the authorisation from the ORR to open Cambridge South is a massive achievement and reflects all the hard work done by everyone involved in the project.
"We are all so excited to open the new station on Sunday 28 June and can't wait to welcome our first customers and see their reaction to their new railway station. We hope they will be as proud of their new station as we are to have built it"
Strategic Impact for UK Rail
The opening of Cambridge South represents a significant investment in rail infrastructure aligned with national priorities around sustainable transport, regional connectivity, and supporting critical sectors such as healthcare and scientific research.
For stakeholders across Network Rail, operators and supply chains—including firms involved in major delivery programmes such as Siemens and TransCityRail—the successful delivery reinforces the importance of early regulatory engagement and collaborative working to achieve complex infrastructure outcomes.
