Colas Rail UK’s Urban division has officially commenced work on Phase 2 of Coventry’s pioneering Very Light Rail (CVLR) programme, following Coventry City Council’s Full Council approval in January 2026.
The next phase will deliver an 800‑metre twin-track link between Coventry Station and Coventry University Technology Park, marking a significant leap forward for the UK’s first operational very light rail system designed for smaller cities.
Commissioned by Coventry City Council, Colas Rail UK is deploying a construction‑led delivery model to streamline timelines, reduce project risk and minimise disruption for residents, businesses, and city‑centre stakeholders.
Extensive preparatory works — including site surveys and procurement of the CVLR’s innovative track slab system — are now complete, allowing the scheme to transition towards full construction.
Speaking on the launch, Iain Anderson, Managing Director for Urban and Industries, said:
“We are thrilled to be starting work on the second phase of the Coventry Very Light Rail, this next phase represents a major step forward in bringing an innovative, sustainable light rail transport solution to Coventry.
Colas Rail is proud to be part of a project that is not only transforming the city’s infrastructure but also setting new standards for innovation in light rail systems across the UK.”
Coventry City Council’s Councillor Jim O’Boyle, Cabinet Member for Jobs, Regeneration and Climate Change, welcomed the return of Colas Rail UK to the programme, noting the success of their partnership on the initial demonstrator route.
He said:
“We worked with Colas Rail to deliver our first demonstrator route, so I’m glad to welcome them back to the team for the next phase which sees our innovative track and vehicle operating in live traffic. We know it goes down fast, we know it’s really good value and we know it has the potential to transform how people move around small to medium sized cities.
“The route to Coventry University’s Technology Park will allow us to showcase the benefits of CVLR in a live environment, proving how this innovative system can be delivered quickly, affordably and with minimal disruption. It’s an exciting moment for Coventry and brings us significantly closer to a transport network that reflects the ambition and ingenuity of our city.”
With Coventry positioning itself at the forefront of UK urban transport innovation, Phase 2 of the CVLR programme is set to become a demonstrator for affordable, sustainable, low‑impact light rail systems capable of transforming mobility in small and medium-sized cities across the country.
