GB Railfreight (GBRf) is set to become one of the first UK freight operators to integrate spatial computing into its training programmes, using immersive 3D technology to prepare drivers and crew for the arrival of the new Class 99 bi-mode locomotives. The innovation is part of a three‑year partnership with JigSpace, the 3D presentation platform, with deployment beginning in March 2026.
Immersive training using Apple Vision Pro
Under the new scheme, GBRf will use an advanced training module created in the JigSpace app, delivered through Apple Vision Pro. The system allows crew to familiarise themselves with the cab layout and major components before entering a physical locomotive.
The training takes place in a fully interactive, true‑to‑scale 360° environment, giving staff the ability to conduct virtual walk‑arounds, study key systems in detail, and gain hands‑on familiarity without the constraints of being in a real cab.
By reducing the requirement for staff to travel to the GBRf Training School in Peterborough, the operator expects to save over £500,000 across two years, while continuing to uphold industry‑leading safety and competency standards.
James Levin, Sales Director at JigSpace, said:
“Partnering with the world’s most innovative operators to bring spatial computing into real operational environments isn’t about experimentation; it’s about deploying it now in ways that strengthen entire organisations and move industries forward. GB Railfreight is setting a new standard for immersive training, building on its already impressive track record in safety, training excellence and operational standards.”

Supporting the introduction of Class 99 locomotives
The launch phase will focus on the Class 99, providing crews with early access to locomotive systems, layouts and operational design. The immersive element is intended to give new drivers a confident head start ahead of the fleet’s full entry into service.
Future project phases will introduce additional modules covering operational tasks such as:
- detailed train preparation
- step‑by‑step component training
- system‑specific operational procedures
This staged expansion will help GBRf embed spatial computing as a long‑term, scalable asset within its national training programme.
A step-change in accessibility and learning quality
David Golding, Safety and Sustainability Director at GB Railfreight, highlighted the training and sustainability benefits:
“Apple Vision Pro allows our teams to interact with locomotive components from anywhere in the country with unprecedented realism. Not only will it save hundreds of prospective train crew travelling to our HQ in Peterborough, but it also gives them a level of access and detail we’ve never been able to offer before, allowing a deep dive into both the cab and key components. I’m confident that spatial computing marks the beginning of a very exciting partnership with JigSpace.”
