Hitachi Rail has strengthened its position in the global passenger rail market after signing a contract worth approximately €168 million to deliver the railway systems for the Saltillo–Nuevo Laredo corridor in northern Mexico.
The project forms part of the Mexican Government’s national programme to revive and expand passenger rail services, aimed at improving regional connectivity while stimulating long‑term economic growth across the country’s northeast.
Under the contract, Hitachi Rail will be responsible for the design, development, supply, installation and commissioning of a comprehensive suite of railway systems, delivering a fully integrated, next‑generation rail infrastructure.
European Standards at the Core of Delivery
A central element of the project is the deployment of ETCS Level 1 signalling and track protection systems, ensuring high levels of safety, reliability and interoperability in line with internationally recognised standards. The use of ETCS also reinforces Mexico’s ambition to align new passenger rail corridors with proven global best practice.
The scope of works also includes advanced telecommunications systems, resilient transmission networks and CCTV solutions, all designed to support continuous, secure and efficient railway operations.
To enable real‑time oversight of the corridor, Hitachi Rail will deliver SCADA systems providing centralised supervision and control of the entire infrastructure. These systems will be complemented by the implementation of a fully equipped Operational Control Centre (OCC) and a dedicated backup facility, allowing coordinated and resilient management of passenger services.

Stations, Depots and Operational Facilities
Beyond core systems, the contract covers comprehensive equipment for 13 passenger stations, as well as inspection and conditioning areas, workshops and depots. Together, these assets form a complete operational ecosystem that supports both day‑to‑day service delivery and long‑term asset performance.
The project is being delivered as part of Phase I of Mexico’s national passenger train programme, which seeks to reintroduce and modernise passenger rail as a sustainable alternative to road transport.
A Longstanding Presence in Mexico
Hitachi Rail has been active in Mexico for more than 55 years, contributing to some of the country’s most significant transport projects. These include the Mexico City Metro, the Suburban Train, the Mexico–Toluca Interurban “El Insurgente”, and nationwide ticketing systems.
Over decades, the company has supported the development of highly skilled local employment while promoting safer and more sustainable mobility solutions.
This latest award marks another milestone in Hitachi Rail’s Mexican portfolio, reinforcing its role in delivering international interoperability standards and advanced signalling and telecommunications systems. The Saltillo–Nuevo Laredo corridor will benefit directly from the company’s global experience, ensuring high levels of operational reliability from day one.
Supporting Sustainable Growth
With this project, Hitachi Rail reaffirms its commitment to rail innovation, sustainable mobility and economic development in Mexico. The corridor is expected to play a key role in improving regional accessibility, supporting trade and labour mobility, and transforming how people travel across the northeast of the country.
For the wider rail industry, the contract underlines the growing global demand for digitally enabled, standards‑based passenger rail systems—an area where European expertise continues to shape international rail investment.
