Hitachi Rail has signed a major framework agreement with Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) to roll out advanced digital signalling technology across Switzerland’s rail network. The programme, valued at approximately €1.5 billion, marks a significant step towards modernising one of Europe’s most respected rail systems.
Under the agreement, around 80% of Switzerland’s existing interlocking systems will be replaced over the next two decades. Interlocking technology is critical for rail safety, preventing conflicting train movements on the same track. Hitachi Rail will supply the latest generation of digital interlockings and Radio Block Centres—key components for implementing a nationwide driver’s cab signalling system.
The benefits of digital interlocking are clear: reduced trackside infrastructure, lower maintenance costs, and improved environmental performance. Hitachi Rail’s solution will also incorporate smart Object Controllers based on the new EULYNX standard, enabling precise control and monitoring of points, signals, and track sections. These controllers don’t just manage assets—they collect and transmit sensor data, paving the way for predictive maintenance and enhanced reliability.
The framework contract runs for an initial ten years, with options for three five-year extensions. It also includes 25 years of maintenance and support for the supplied systems. SBB estimates the total investment for the programme at around €1.5 billion.
Kurt Sauerwein, Managing Director of Hitachi Rail in Switzerland, said:
“Hitachi Rail will work with our partners to shape a new era of rail transport in Switzerland.”
“The introduction of digital interlockings is a technological milestone that not only enhances the efficiency and sustainability of the Swiss rail network but also reinforces Switzerland’s position as an international leader in mobility. We look forward to contributing our expertise and innovation to this program.”
