Knorr-Bremse to supply systems for Alstom EMU fleet

Alstom has commissioned Knorr-Bremse to equip 42 high-performance electric multiple units (EMUs) with state-of-the-art braking, entrance and sanitary systems.

The fleet of EMUs is based on the Coradia Max platform, with the four-car units destined for regional rail services in Schleswig Holstein, in northern Germany.

Knorr-Bremse will start to supply system solutions for the project in early 2025, with deliveries running until late 2027.

Dr. Nicolas Lange, Member of the Executive Board of Knorr-Bremse AG, said: “With this order, raised as part of a wide-ranging platform partnership between Alstom and Knorr-Bremse, we’ll be supplying various technologies for enhancing train safety, efficiency and passenger comfort, and assisting Alstom’s project implementation team with our proven systems expertise.

“Our relationship with Alstom has developed on a basis of mutual trust over many years – and this platform partnership in particular is a very good example of our close collaboration.”

The Coradia Max trains were ordered by Schleswig-Holstein’s local public transit association, NAH.SH, and under a framework agreement concluded in 2021, Knorr-Bremse will act as a key supplier of systems for the fleet.

The new multi-system order covers electropneumatic braking systems, oil-free PistonSupply Eco compressors, highly configurable FlexControl Modular brake control systems, SysControl brake electronics and SandGrip sanding systems.

Knorr-Bremse subsidiary IFE is supplying 672 entrance systems, while another subsidiary, Evac, is supplying three SanSys sanitary units per trainset. The sustainable sanitary system features benefits such as low water consumption and recyclable materials such as aluminium, rather than fibreglass.

The four-car EMUs consist of two double-decker and two single-decker cars, and have a total of up to 390 seats. Entering operation in late 2027, the vehicles will connect towns and cities across Schleswig-Holstein with Hamburg.
