Lumo to roll out next-generation Starlink Wi-Fi across East Coast fleet

Open access operator Lumo is preparing to introduce next-generation Starlink Wi-Fi across its East Coast Main Line services this autumn, in a move set to significantly enhance onboard connectivity for passengers.

The rollout will apply to Lumo’s 100% electric fleet operating between London King’s Cross, Stevenage, Newcastle, Morpeth, Edinburgh, Falkirk and Glasgow. The upgrade marks a notable step forward for digital connectivity on one of the UK’s busiest long-distance routes.

Starlink’s low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite network is designed to deliver high-speed, low-latency internet access across both rural and urban areas. By harnessing satellite technology rather than relying solely on trackside infrastructure or mobile coverage, the system aims to address longstanding connectivity challenges on intercity services.

The deployment is being delivered in collaboration with train manufacturer Hitachi, connectivity specialist Icomera, and rolling stock leasing company Beacon Rail. Together, the partners will integrate the satellite-enabled system across Lumo’s fleet to provide more consistent and reliable connectivity throughout journeys.

This latest investment reflects Lumo’s continued focus on enhancing the onboard experience for both business and leisure travellers. Demand for stable, high-quality Wi-Fi has grown significantly, particularly as passengers increasingly expect to work, stream content, or stay connected throughout their journeys.

Traditional Wi-Fi systems on trains have often been impacted by network blackspots and infrastructure constraints, particularly on long-distance routes. By contrast, Starlink’s satellite-based approach offers a more consistent connection along the full route, reducing gaps in service and improving reliability.

The introduction of the technology represents a major leap forward for passengers travelling on the East Coast Main Line. With improved connectivity, customers will be able to make better use of travel time, whether for productivity, communication or entertainment.

Lumo has already demonstrated its ambition in this area, having introduced 5G-enabled Wi-Fi on its newer West Coast services between London Euston and Stirling — one of the few offerings of its kind in the UK rail sector. The addition of Starlink on East Coast services further positions the operator as a leader in onboard digital innovation.

Paul Jackson, Head of Customer and Stakeholder Engagement, said:
“Providing a high-quality, reliable Wi-Fi experience is vital for our customers, whether they’re travelling for business or leisure. We know people want to stay connected and work effectively while onboard.

“The introduction of Starlink technology on our East Coast Main Line services marks a significant step forward in connectivity. Working with Hitachi and Icomera, we’re committed to delivering a modern, seamless experience that helps customers get the most out of their journey with Lumo.”

The announcement follows further industry recognition for Lumo’s innovative approach to customer engagement. The operator was recently shortlisted at the Leadership in Passenger Transport Awards for a campaign that used digital petrol station screens to display live train information and ticket pricing, aimed at promoting more sustainable travel choices.

With the Starlink rollout, Lumo continues to strengthen its position at the forefront of rail technology, signalling a wider shift within the industry towards satellite-enabled connectivity as a solution to long-standing onboard Wi-Fi limitations.
