Lumo has revealed the first refurbished train that will operate its forthcoming West Coast open access services, marking a key milestone as the low‑cost operator counts down to launch later this spring.
The refurbished Class 222 fleet is being upgraded at Alstom’s Widnes modernisation facility, working in partnership with rolling stock owner Beacon. The refresh includes upgraded interiors, refreshed existing seating and, in selected coaches, brand‑new seats finished in contemporary grey and silver tones.
As with its East Coast operation, Lumo will operate a single‑class layout across the West Coast fleet, ensuring every customer benefits from the same standard of seating and panoramic views along the cross‑border route.

The new West Coast service will carry Lumo’s established proposition of affordable fares, strong customer service and a focus on community connectivity. Speaking as the first refurbished train was unveiled, Stuart Jones, Managing Director of First Rail Open Access, said:
“This is a real milestone as we prepare to launch our new West Coast service this spring. The refurbished trains are certainly eye-catching with our signature Lumo blue. I’m also proud of the updated interiors that are ready to provide the comfortable service that we’re renowned for.
“This is a project centred upon collaboration and I’d like to thank Alstom and Beacon for their continued hard work as we prepare to better connect communities on the West Coast.”
Beacon also highlighted the passenger and connectivity benefits delivered through the refurbishment programme. Adam Cunliffe, Chief Executive Officer of Beacon, said:
“Beacon is delighted to partner with FirstGroup and Alstom on the upgrade of the Lumo Class 222 fleet. Beacon is proud to continually invest in its fleets, and the Class 222 refurbishment will give passengers on the new Lumo West Coast service a refreshed, comfortable interior together with enhanced wi‑fi for improved connectivity. Beacon looks forward to supporting Lumo and Alstom to deliver an additional five refurbished trains and for them to commence passenger service.”

Once in service, the refurbished Class 222 trains will operate on the West Coast Main Line, calling at London Euston, Milton Keynes, Nuneaton, Crewe, Preston, Carlisle, Lockerbie, Motherwell, Whifflet, Greenfaulds, Larbert and Stirling.
Sustainability has also been central to the programme, with the refurbishment delivered in line with Alstom’s policy of sending no waste to landfill. Materials removed during the upgrade are being recycled wherever possible.
Lumo is already recognised as one of the UK’s top‑performing open access operators, achieving strong reliability and customer satisfaction scores. Alongside its new West Coast services, the operator continues to run trains on the East Coast Main Line, linking London with the North East of England and Scotland.
