Passengers using the East Suffolk line are encouraged to plan their journeys in advance, as essential track and bridge improvement works are scheduled from late October through December.
Much of the railway infrastructure in this area dates back over a century. To ensure continued safe and reliable service, engineers will be replacing old, jointed rail with modern, continuously welded rail. This upgrade will not only enhance safety but also reduce noise and improve ride comfort for passengers.
In addition to the track renewal, vital repairs will be carried out on two key rail bridges:
- The bridge over the River Deben near Ufford level crossing on Bridge Road
- The bridge over the River Alde near Beversham level crossing on Farnham Road
These works will include strengthening the structures and restoring the brickwork on the bridge abutments.
Beyond improving passenger experience, these upgrades also support future freight transport plans, including Sizewell’s strategy to move construction materials by rail—helping reduce road traffic and environmental impact.
Simon Milburn, Network Rail’s infrastructure director for Anglia, said:
“This investment is about securing the future of the East Suffolk line. Replacing the track and repairing the bridges will mean safer, more reliable journeys and less noise for passengers and communities. Importantly, it also plays a crucial role in supporting the Sizewell C project by making sure the railway is ready to carry construction materials by rail, helping reduce the impact on local roads. Thank you to passengers and communities for bearing with us while this work is carried out.”
Martin Beable, Greater Anglia’s Managing Director, said:
“The East Suffolk line improvements are essential in significantly improving the long-term safety and reliability of our network for our passengers. Replacing the track will mean reduced noise for local communities and further support Sizewell’s transport strategy
