More than 800 projects will take place across Britain’s railway network over the two bank holiday weekends in May, Network Rail has confirmed.
The work across both weekends will represent a total of £135 million of investment.
The most notable projects are:
Early May Bank Holiday (4th-6th May)
- Work on the new station at Cambridge South
- Track renewals around Coventry
- Improvement work on the West Coast Main Line at Crewe, Wigan and other locations
- Track renewals around Liverpool
Late May Bank Holiday (25th-27th May)
- Junction refurbishment in North London
- Major work on new station at Beaulieu Park near Chelmsford
- Major work around Crewe and Carlisle, including improved drainage, new track and new points
- Track renewals between Carstairs and Lanark
Network Rail’s System Operator director, Anit Chandarana, said:
“I’m pleased to say that while we’re continuing our investment in making Britain’s railway more reliable this May, the vast majority of the railway will be open for business as normal.”
“The work this month will see new track laid on one of the busiest mixed-use railways in the world – the West Coast Main Line – along with work to replace worn out equipment at junctions at Crewe.
“We’ve also got more work to build a new station at Cambridge South, which will play a key role in developing the city and its new biomedical campus in a sustainable way. That’s what the railway does best and it’s great to see that continuing this year.”
In total, there will be 487 projects across the early May bank holiday, worth £75 million.
There will be 324 projects across the late May bank holiday, worth £60 million.
