Network Rail engineers have successfully completed an intensive programme of railway improvement works across Bedfordshire, delivering tangible benefits for passengers through enhanced safety, accessibility and service reliability.
A key milestone has been reached at Harlington station, where the ageing footbridge has now been safely removed. This follows the installation of a new, modern replacement structure in December, marking a significant upgrade to station infrastructure. Engineers also took the opportunity to complete improvements to the station’s overhead line equipment (OLE), further strengthening the reliability of services on the route.
Further south at Luton station, early construction activity is now underway as part of the Government’s Access for All programme. During the recent closure, engineers excavated the site, installed piles and erected hoarding to prepare for the next phase of works. The project will see Network Rail deliver a new fully accessible footbridge with lifts, with completion planned for spring 2027.

Meanwhile, significant track renewal works were completed at Flitwick station, where teams replaced life‑expired rail, ballast and sleepers alongside platform 1. The complex operation required five engineering trains, a tamper maintenance machine and seven road‑rail vehicles, alongside adjustments to the overhead line equipment.
As well as improving long‑term reliability, the renewed track has been realigned closer to the platform edge, reducing the stepping distance for passengers and improving overall accessibility.

Dan Matthews, Network Rail operations director, said:
“This has been a highly productive period of work, with our teams delivering several important projects safely and on time.
“Removing the old footbridge at Harlington marks another milestone in a significant investment, the improvements at Flitwick are already making a positive difference for passengers, and the early work at Luton is a step to delivering major and lasting benefits for station visitors.
“We’d like to thank everyone involved for their hard work and professionalism, and we’re sorry to passengers whose journey was affected while the railway here was closed for two days.”
Network Rail has confirmed that three further weekend closures will take place over the coming months to allow additional railway improvement work, affecting train services between Bedford and London.
