More than £1 million is being invested in the Stranraer railway line this month as Network Rail undertakes essential infrastructure improvements designed to deliver more reliable journeys for passengers and safeguard the route’s long-term performance.
Between 28 November and 8 December, engineering teams will carry out critical drainage upgrades along key sections of track, deploying over 2,000 tonnes of materials to mitigate flooding risks and maintain service reliability. The programme also includes an upgrade to Markdh No.1 Level Crossing, alongside inspections of structures and embankments to ensure asset integrity.
This work forms part of Network Rail’s ongoing commitment to improving the resilience and reliability of the south-west rail corridor, a vital transport link for communities and businesses.
Ross Moran, Route Director at Network Rail Scotland, said:
“We’re investing in essential improvements to help keep this route reliable for the communities that depend on it.”
“Strengthening drainage and inspecting key assets will help make the line more resilient to Scotland’s challenging weather, ensuring services can continue to run smoothly.”
We know this work means short term changes to journeys, and we apologise for any inconvenience it will cause. Our teams will be working hard to complete the upgrades as quickly and safely as possible, and we appreciate passengers’ patience while we deliver this important project.”
Mark Ilderton, ScotRail Service Delivery Director, added:
“ScotRail is committed to keeping customers moving while Network Rail completes this essential work between Ayr and Stranraer.
A robust rail replacement plan will be in place to ensure people can continue to travel reliably throughout the works.
We’ll provide clear, up-to-date information to help customers plan their journeys and travel with confidence, and we’re grateful for their patience and understanding while these important improvements are carried out.”
