Passengers travelling between Coryton, Caerphilly and Penarth are now benefitting from brand-new electric trains, as part of Transport for Wales’ ongoing transformation of rail services across the region.
The introduction of five new tri-mode Class 756 trains brings the total number of new electric trains in daily service to 19, with 24 trains in the full fleet. These modern trains are part of the Welsh Government’s £800 million investment in rail infrastructure and rolling stock.
The new Class 756 trains offer:
- 50% more passenger capacity
- Improved accessibility, including level boarding for easier access
- Enhanced comfort and reliability for everyday journeys
Following a successful trial on the Coryton line earlier this year, the new trains are now in full service. The line will also benefit from a new Sunday service starting this December, improving weekend connectivity for local communities.
Ken Skates, Cabinet Secretary for Transport and North Wales, said:
“I am delighted that we are introducing more brand-new electric trains on the core valleys lines to deliver Better Transport for Wales.
“The Class 756s state-of-the-art trains are transforming travel for passengers with faster and more frequents services as well as greater capacity, comfort, and improved accessibility.
“This is another significant milestone on our mission to upgrade the Core Valley Lines and deliver a turn-up-and go metro service.”

These tri-mode trains—capable of running on electric, battery, and diesel power—are already transforming travel experiences on the Merthyr, Aberdare and Treherbert lines, and now extend those benefits to more passengers across South Wales.
Transport for Wales continues to invest in modern, sustainable transport solutions that support economic growth, reduce emissions, and improve accessibility for all.
