GTR and Railway Children

New partnership to strengthen safeguarding and support across rail network

Govia Thameslink Railway has partnered with Railway Children to enhance safeguarding and mental health support for vulnerable young people across London’s rail network.

The initiative was highlighted during a meeting at East Croydon station between Railway Children representatives and GTR’s Chief Executive Officer.

Funded through GTR’s “Your Station, Your Community Improvement Fund,” the grant will strengthen Railway Children’s training, community engagement, and direct intervention programmes along GTR routes. This includes equipping station staff to identify and support vulnerable individuals and fostering stronger partnerships within station communities.

East Croydon and Finsbury Park are key focus areas due to higher safeguarding concerns. As part of the partnership, the Railway Children Youth Ambassador Network has launched a mental health awareness campaign, designed by young people for young people. Featuring across digital and print media at stations, the campaign encourages open conversations about mental health and reaching out for help.

Chief Executive Officer at Govia Thameslink Railway, Angie Doll, said:

“It’s essential that our railway colleagues feel prepared and empowered to support someone in crisis – particularly a young person who may be feeling lost or vulnerable. Railway Children UK is a charity close to my heart and this partnership will help make our stations and trains safer and more compassionate places for everyone.”

The collaboration aims to improve safeguarding responses through targeted training, cross-sector partnerships, and direct engagement with at-risk youth. By creating visible pathways to support, the project seeks to make a tangible difference to vulnerable individuals.

In addition to GTR’s ongoing support, Angie Doll also serves as Chair of the 2025 Railway Ball Committee, a major fundraising event taking place this November in aid of Railway Children.
