Northern Line Night Tube to return in July

The Northern Line Night Tube is set to make its triumphant return since being suspended in March 2020 at the start of the pandemic. Transport for London (TfL) are planning to open the Northern Line on the evening of this coming Saturday, 2nd July. This return to night services comes with the hope of providing further economic boosts to London’s economy, to aid in post-pandemic recovery within the sector. Current statistics show that ridership on the Tube network is 72 per cent of pre-pandemic levels.

Night services along the tube had returned in November 2021 along the Victoria Line, accompanied by Highbury & Islington and New Cross Gate opening in December of the same year. The night services were bolstered even further in May 2022 by the return of the Jubilee line. Further plans for night services include the Piccadilly Line, which will return this summer.

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said:

"This is another landmark moment in the capital’s recovery from the pandemic – and fantastic news for Londoners and visitors who want to enjoy the capital’s incredible nightlife, safe in the knowledge that they will be able to get the Northern line home.

“It means that Night Tube services have now returned on the Central, Victoria and Jubilee lines, delivering not only a huge economic boost for our world-renowned night-time economy but also making a huge difference to people who want to travel around our city at night.”

The recovery of London’s economy has come hand in hand with the bolstering of rail services as a safe and reliable public transport system which allows for work commutes and general travel across the interconnected city. The reintroduction of night-based services will allow the people of London to enjoy the capitals evening entertainment once again whilst being provided with safe and reliable transport home.

Nick Dent, TfL's Director of Customer Operations said:

"I'm very pleased that the Night Tube service on the Northern line will return on Saturday 2 July, providing a further boost to the capital’s recovery. Night Tube provides a safe and quick travel option for all Londoners and visitors looking to make the most of all the capital has to offer in the evenings, and those who need to travel to or from work at night. The summer is the perfect time for Londoners and visitors to take full advantage of London, including its world-class night-time economy.”

RMT strike action is still ongoing amongst Night Tube services and will continue until the 4th December, however there are currently minimal disruptions to services, shown with the consistent running of the Victoria and Jubilee lines.
