Oxfordshire leaders have unveiled a bold vision to transform rail services across the county through OxRail 2040: Plan for Rail. The strategy sets out proposals for four new railway stations, upgrades to all 23 existing stations, and the reopening of the Cowley branch line to passengers.
A potential fifth station at Ardley is also being explored, while priorities such as restoring double track on the North Cotswold line to Hanborough are identified as essential to delivering faster, more reliable journeys.
The plans are designed to strengthen Oxfordshire's transport network, improve links to major science and business parks, support the development of new housing, and reduce congestion on the roads.
Ben Rudkin, Operations Director at Resonate Group commented: "Oxfordshire taking bold steps to transform its rail network is a hugely encouraging sign in creating opportunities in the region as improved connectivity doesn't just move people from A to B, it opens doors to employment, and helps businesses access the talent and markets they need to thrive."
"Just as technology is reshaping the way our railways operate, it also plays a critical role in maximising the benefits of projects like this.”
“Modern signalling systems, smarter scheduling tools and real-time data platforms can help services run more efficiently, extend capacity and improve the passenger experience."
"Together with new stations, upgraded lines and expanded services, these innovations will give Oxfordshire the connectivity, agility and reliability it needs to unlock up to new jobs, support new housing and strengthen links to science parks and business hubs. This is about building a transport network that underpins economic growth and ensures the region remains an attractive place to live, work and invest."
The OxRail 2040 proposals are now open to public consultation until 1 October. A final version will be presented to Oxfordshire County Council's Cabinet for adoption in November.
