Work has officially begun to restore passenger rail services between Portishead and Bristol, bringing one of the UK's most significant rail reopening projects a step closer to completion.
Backed by more than £63 million of Government investment, the scheme will reconnect over 50,000 people in North Somerset to the national rail network for the first time in more than 60 years. Passenger services are expected to begin in 2028, providing a direct journey between Portishead and Bristol Temple Meads in around 25 minutes – significantly faster than travelling by car during peak periods.
The restored route will operate an hourly service linking Portishead and Bristol Temple Meads, with stops at Pill, Parson Street and Bedminster. Beyond improving connectivity, the project is expected to unlock wider economic and housing growth across the West of England, generating an estimated £43 million annually for the regional economy.
Looking further ahead, the line is expected to extend through to Bristol Brabazon and the new Aviva Arena, providing sustainable transport links to one of the country's largest regeneration developments and a major new destination for entertainment, sport and live music.
Major Infrastructure Improvements
The project includes the upgrade of 5.5 miles of existing freight railway, the restoration of a further three miles of former railway infrastructure, and the construction of two new stations at Portishead and Pill.
The reopening is particularly significant for Portishead, which is currently one of the largest towns in England without a railway station.
Train services on the route are being developed by Great Western Railway (GWR), which will enter public ownership in December before ultimately becoming part of Great British Railways (GBR).

Rail Minister Lord Peter Hendy said:

Partnership Delivering Results
The Government contribution forms part of a wider £197 million funding package agreed with project partners, including the West of England Combined Authority and North Somerset Council.
The scheme has been delivered through close collaboration between the Department for Transport, Network Rail, local authorities and regional stakeholders.

West of England Mayor Helen Godwin described the start of construction as a major milestone for communities that have campaigned for decades to see passenger rail restored.
