A £12 million investment in rail infrastructure is set to transform maintenance operations at Canton depot in Cardiff, with the installation of a new bogie drop facility designed to enhance the servicing of Transport for Wales (TfW) trains.
Funded by the Welsh Government through Transport for Wales, the state-of-the-art installation enables engineers to remove, repair and replace the wheelsets and underframe equipment of train carriages more efficiently and safely. The upgrade marks a significant step forward in improving fleet reliability and reducing downtime across the network.
Previously, trains requiring specialist work had to be transported to other maintenance locations, adding time and complexity to repairs. With the new bogie drop now operational, much of this work can be completed on site at Canton — allowing trains to return to passenger service far more quickly.

The facility was officially unveiled during a visit by Deputy Minister for Transport Mark Hooper, who highlighted its strategic importance to the wider Welsh rail network.
"This investment at Canton is part of our commitment to building a modern, resilient transport network — one that performs well for the passengers who depend on it every day.
“By maintaining more of our fleet locally and efficiently, we can get trains back into service faster and continue to improve reliability and punctuality for passengers across the region."
Canton depot plays a critical role in maintaining trains serving communities throughout South Wales, and the new capability will be particularly valuable during the autumn months, when challenging conditions such as leaf fall can increase wear on rolling stock and demand faster maintenance turnaround times.
The investment also aligns with the Welsh Government’s long-term strategy to strengthen in-house rail expertise and reduce reliance on external facilities, helping to build greater resilience within the national transport network.
Dan Tipper, Chief Infrastructure Officer at Transport for Wales, described the new addition as a milestone moment for TfW’s ongoing transformation programme.

"We are delighted to see the new bogie drop facility officially in service at our Canton depot. This £12 million investment is a fantastic milestone in our journey to transform rail services across Wales and the Borders.
"By bringing this specialist maintenance capability in-house, we can significantly speed up repair times, improve daily reliability, and ensure we keep more trains running for our customers and the communities we serve."
With passenger expectations rising and operational resilience under increasing scrutiny, investments like this underline the sector’s focus on smarter, more localised maintenance solutions that keep fleets moving and services dependable.
