A major £4.6 million investment in the East Coast Main Line (ECML) is set to begin next month, with Network Rail undertaking a series of infrastructure improvements designed to boost reliability, resilience and long-term performance on one of the UK's most important rail corridors.
The programme of works, taking place between North Berwick and Dunbar, will strengthen a section of railway that supports vital passenger and freight services linking Edinburgh Waverley with London King's Cross and destinations across the wider UK rail network.
To facilitate the work safely and efficiently, the railway between Edinburgh and Newcastle will be closed over two weekends: from Saturday 19 September to Monday 21 September and again from Saturday 26 September to Monday 28 September.
During the planned possessions, engineers will renew one kilometre of track at Hedderwick, install new drainage infrastructure and replace a further half-kilometre of rail at Ninewar. The project will also include slope stabilisation works at Howburn, near Reston, helping to improve the long-term resilience of the route against environmental and geotechnical challenges.
Additional engineering work is scheduled to take place south of the border between Newcastle and Berwick on Saturday 3 October and Sunday 4 October, continuing the wider programme of enhancements along the route.
The work forms part of ongoing efforts to improve reliability and reduce future maintenance requirements on the ECML, a strategic railway connecting communities, businesses and freight operators across the UK.
Train services operated by LNER, ScotRail, Lumo, CrossCountry and TransPennine Express will be affected during the closures. Rail replacement transport and alternative travel arrangements will be provided where possible.
