Cardiff Newport Track Renewals

Railway Reopens Between Newport and Cardiff After Major Week Long Upgrade Programme

The key section of railway between Newport and Cardiff reopened on Monday 23 March, following a full week of intensive engineering work designed to strengthen the long‑term reliability of the South Wales Main Line. The upgrade — delivered by more than 150 engineers from Network Rail, working alongside partners Colas Rail UK and AECOM — represents one of the most significant pieces of track investment in the region in recent years.

The programme, which ran from 16 to 23 March, focused on renewing life‑expired equipment and improving track performance to provide more dependable journeys for passengers and freight operators. To safely complete the most complex work, a full line closure took place on 21 and 22 March, with replacement buses keeping passengers moving throughout the weekend. Services resumed from the first train on Monday 23 March.

What the Upgrade Delivered

As part of the renewal programme, engineers completed several critical infrastructure improvements, including:

  • Replacing points, the moveable rails that allow trains to safely switch between tracks.
  • Laying 1,120 tonnes of new ballast, enhancing stability and performance.
  • Renewing 400 metres of track, improving long‑term reliability.
  • Using the Kirow crane, one of Europe’s largest rail cranes, to lift and install major track components.

This investment forms an essential part of ongoing efforts to maintain a safe, reliable railway for both passenger and freight operators. It also supports future capacity and service growth across the South Wales Main Line.
