In the very first keynote of TransCityRail North 2025, Martin Tugwell – Chief Executive of Transport for the North – celebrated the role that rail has played in transforming the country for the last 200 years, something that is continuing to this day.
Martin discussed how railways have been a catalyst for economic transformation, not just for cities but for entire regions. He highlighted the success of projects like the Northumberland Line, which has recently reopened and is already exceeding passenger expectations, signalling a clear demand for enhanced connectivity. The reopening of Okehampton Station is another example of how investing in rail infrastructure can breathe new life into communities and stimulate local economies.
A major focus of the conversation was the Northern Powerhouse Rail initiative, which is aiming to unlock the economic potential of the North by improving connectivity across key corridors. Martin stressed that this initiative is not merely about transport; it’s about creating opportunities for people and places, reducing social exclusion, and fostering sustainable growth. He emphasised that a strong rail network can lead to increased property values, attract businesses, and ultimately enhance the quality of life for residents.
Accessibility proved to be another key theme in the keynote. Tugwell noted that less than half of the rail stations in the North are fully accessible, posing a significant barrier for many potential users. He went on to share am inspiring story about how innovative solutions that can be implemented to improve accessibility without incurring exorbitant costs, showcasing the need for creative thinking in transport planning.
Concluding the conversation, Martin put an emphasis on the importance of collaboration among various stakeholders in the rail industry. He called for a more integrated approach to transport planning, one that considers the unique needs of communities and the aspirations of local leaders. With ongoing challenges in funding and investment, he urged those in the room to remain optimistic and innovative in making the case for rail investment.
