Passengers travelling with LNER along the stunning 45-mile stretch of the East Coast Main Line between Newcastle and Berwick-upon-Tweed can now enjoy more than just breathtaking views — they’ll also benefit from vastly improved mobile and Wi-Fi connectivity.
This upgrade comes thanks to a joint initiative between LNER and rail telecoms specialists Railsite Telecom, with support from mobile network providers O2 and VodafoneThree. Newly installed mobile masts along the route are eliminating long-standing signal blackspots, delivering stronger and more reliable connections not only for rail passengers but also for nearby residents and businesses.
Connectivity has long been a top priority for LNER customers, but Northumberland’s rural terrain presented unique challenges. By collaborating closely with mobile operators and Northumberland County Council, Railsite Telecom identified eight key locations where new infrastructure would have the greatest impact.
This investment marks a significant step forward in enhancing the travel experience for LNER customers, while also supporting digital inclusion in the wider Northumberland community.
James Downey, Finance Director at LNER, said: "This project is a brilliant example of the public and private sector coming together to find a solution to a problem. The Northumberland section of the East Coast Main Line is one of the most beautiful parts of our route, passing by rural villages and skimming stunning coastline. However, its geography made it challenging to eliminate those frustrating ’not-spots’. We’re proud to have delivered a solution that not only enhances our customers’ experience but also brings benefits to the communities we serve."
Councillor Glen Sanderson, Leader of Northumberland County Council, said: “We’re delighted to support a project that delivers benefits to our communities and visitors alike. Improved connectivity is vital for rural areas, not just for convenience, but for safety, economic growth, and social inclusion. This initiative demonstrates how collaboration between local government, the rail industry, and telecoms providers can deliver meaningful improvements for both residents and visitors in Northumberland."
