Spain’s First Regional Account Based Ticketing System Passes Major Milestone in Galicia

Spain’s first fully regional account‑based ticketing (ABT) system has reached a significant deployment milestone, with more than 50% of Galicia’s interurban transport services now live on a single, unified platform.

The Galician Mobility Platform 4.0 (MoBT), delivered for the Xunta de Galicia in partnership with Plexus Tech, is powered by Masabi’s Justride account‑based ticketing platform and represents one of Europe’s most ambitious regional fare collection programmes to date.

The system is currently operational across 32 transport contracts, covering more than half of Galicia’s interurban services. This includes key metropolitan areas such as A Coruña and Pontevedra, alongside major regional corridors including Ferrol–Ourense, Ferrol–Vigo, Lugo–Vigo and A Coruña–Lugo. As rollout continues, the platform will expand to encompass more than 120 operators, all operating under a single regional fare collection back office.

A Regional, Account‑Based Approach

At the heart of MoBT is a centralised, regional account‑based ticketing back office, enabling passengers to plan, pay for and validate journeys using their mobile phones. The platform removes the need for cash or physical tickets, allowing users to manage a virtual wallet, purchase and validate tickets digitally, and access multimodal journey planning through a single application.

Designed with scalability in mind, the system also provides a future‑proof foundation for additional capabilities, including open payments and further digital payment options as the network evolves.

Industry Significance

For transport authorities and operators, the Galicia programme demonstrates how a regional, account‑based model can simplify fare collection across fragmented networks while improving passenger experience and operational efficiency. For passengers, it delivers a more consistent, intuitive and accessible way to travel across urban and interurban services.

Commenting on the milestone, Brian Zanghi, CEO of Masabi, said:

“Reaching over 50% of Galicia’s interurban transport network is a significant milestone and demonstrates the strength of a regional, account-based approach to fare collection. By bringing multiple contracts together on a single platform, the Xunta de Galicia is making travel simpler for passengers while building a scalable foundation for the future. Together with the Xunta and Plexus, we are delivering a modern mobility system that can continue to evolve as the region’s needs grow.”

Growing Momentum for Regional ABT

The Galicia deployment reflects a wider shift across Europe and North America, as transport authorities look to modernise legacy ticketing systems, improve accessibility and encourage public transport use through digital‑first, account‑based solutions.

Masabi brings extensive experience in delivering and operating ABT at scale. Its EZFare system in the United States, which spans 19 operators across six states, is frequently cited as a leading example of multi‑operator, account‑based fare collection and continues to expand.

With more than half of Galicia’s interurban network now live, the MoBT programme is firmly on track to become one of Europe’s most comprehensive regional account‑based ticketing implementations.
