Stadler has officially opened a new state‑of‑the‑art train workshop in Obersiebenbrunn near Vienna, marking a major milestone for the future of the Austrian rail industry. The facility plays a central role in the maintenance, commissioning and certification of high‑speed trains, while supporting the delivery of Stadler’s rolling stock projects across Austria and Europe.
The new workshop was formally inaugurated on 10 April 2026 and has already been operational since March 2026, when it began servicing Westbahn’s high‑speed fleet. By maintaining these trains locally, Stadler is directly supporting fleet availability, operational reliability and passenger service continuity.
“Austria is an important market for us. That is why we are systematically expanding our presence. The new service centre is a key piece of the puzzle in this regard. With the new workshop, we are creating the conditions to maintain the high-speed trains efficiently. This is crucial for the stable and reliable operation of the trains,” said Peter Spuhler, Chairman of the Board of Directors at Stadler.
New Capacity for a Growing and More Complex Rail Fleet
The Obersiebenbrunn site is designed as more than a dedicated Stadler maintenance facility. Described as a “hall for everyone”, the workshop will be available to all operators using Stadler vehicles, enabling a shared, standardised approach to servicing and test preparation.
The facility allows for the optimisation and harmonisation of processes required for vehicle testing and commissioning, helping to reduce time to service entry and improve operational efficiency across multiple fleets.
“With this facility, we are responding to the increasing demands of an ever-more-congested and technologically sophisticated rail network. In doing so, we are laying the foundations for maintaining trains efficiently, sustainably and to the highest technical standards. Our goal is clear: with this project, we are providing a decisive boost to the future viability of the railways,” explains Christian Diewald, CEO of Stadler Austria.

Partnership Delivery Demonstrates Speed and Efficiency
The project was delivered in partnership with STRABAG, with construction completed in just seven months. The rapid delivery highlights how close collaboration between industrial and construction partners can accelerate the rollout of critical rail infrastructure.
“With the new maintenance hall, we have, together with Stadler, made an important contribution to a modern and reliable rail infrastructure in Austria in just seven months of construction. It significantly strengthens the rail system because modern rolling stock can be maintained more quickly and efficiently. Thousands of passengers benefit from this every day. Such infrastructure projects enhance the quality of public transport and make Austria a more attractive location for business and mobility in the long term,” said Franz Redl, Member of the Executive Board of STRABAG AG Austria.

Political Backing for Rail as a Strategic Industry
The new workshop has also been strongly endorsed by national and regional political leaders, underlining the strategic importance of rail manufacturing, maintenance and innovation to Austria’s economy.
“The rail industry is a key sector for Austria and Europe: it creates tens of thousands of jobs, drives innovation and strengthens our industrial value creation. Stadler’s new hall represents a targeted investment in this future – in modern infrastructure, expertise and competitiveness. Such projects secure value creation in the country and sustainably strengthen Austria as a high-performing rail and industrial hub,” emphasises Peter Hanke, Federal Minister for Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure.
“This project sends a strong signal for Lower Austria as a business location. It shows that, with our clear economic strategy and targeted location policy, we can attract and retain internationally active industrial companies in the long term. At the same time, high-quality jobs and additional value creation are generated in the region,” adds Johanna Mikl-Leitner, Governor of Lower Austria.
Modern Infrastructure with Direct High‑Speed Network Access
The new facility extends the existing railway siding at the AGRANA site in Obersiebenbrunn / Leopoldsdorf. It includes a 225‑metre‑long maintenance hall covering approximately 4,600 m², dedicated office space, and an additional marquee hall used for storage.
A key advantage of the site is its direct connection to the European rail network, including access to a 200 km/h main line, which is planned to be equipped with ETCS in the future. This ensures seamless integration into cross‑border operations and supports the next generation of high‑speed and digitally enabled rail services.
