Stadler Secures Major TCDD Contract for 35 EURO4001 Locomotives

Stadler has secured a significant milestone in its international freight locomotive programme after being awarded a contract by Turkish rail operator TCDD Taşımacılık A.Ş. to design, manufacture and deliver 35 EURO4001 diesel‑electric mainline locomotives. The agreement also includes capital spares, spare parts, consumables, specialised tools, test equipment, and three years of maintenance and repair support.

This newly signed deal reinforces Stadler’s commitment to supporting Turkey’s modernisation of rail freight capability. The EURO4001, described as the most modern and powerful diesel-electric locomotive in Europe, has been engineered specifically for heavy freight transport on non‑electrified routes and steep gradients.

Building on the EURO Family Success Story

The order marks another milestone in the expanding success of the EURO locomotive family. To date, more than 400 units have been sold across 12 European countries, as well as in Uruguay and Turkey.
Stadler’s EURODUAL version has already been in reliable and energy‑efficient operation in Turkey for four years, further strengthening the manufacturer’s position in the region’s freight market.

The locomotives destined for TCDD Taşımacılık will be designed and built at Stadler’s Valencia competence centre. Collaboration with Stadler Service Türkiye, alongside Turkish partners AYKAL Group A.Ş. and CERTIFER Türkiye, will support seamless local integration, testing and entry into service.

Cutting Emissions With Full Interoperability

The EURO4001 meets the stringent Euro Stage V emission standards, enabling a dramatic reduction in particulate matter emissions by over 90% and a cut of more than 50% in nitrogen oxides and hydrocarbons when compared with the existing Turkish fleet.
Additionally, the locomotives are fully compliant with European TSI interoperability requirements and come equipped with ETCS Level 2 as well as the national ATS system, ensuring full operational compatibility across Turkey’s rail network.

Supporting Turkey’s Growing Freight Transport Hub

Turkey is fast emerging as a major rail freight transit country connecting Europe, Asia and the Middle East. As part of its long‑term strategy to expand rail capacity and shift freight from road to rail, the government is continuing to liberalise the freight market and modernise locomotive fleets.

Ambitions include boosting annual freight volume to around 400,000 containers by 2030, a vast increase from 29,000 containers transported in 2021. The introduction of state‑of‑the‑art locomotives such as the EURO4001 plays a key role in this national logistics strategy.

“The EURO4001 is the most advanced and powerful diesel-electric locomotive in Europe. We are delighted that it will enable us to make a significant contribution to Turkey’s goal of creating an efficient, interoperable freight transport network that is committed to reducing emissions.”
